“To be nobody but yourself,
in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else,
means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight,
and never stop fighting.”
e.e.cummings
This has always been one of my favorite quotes. Sadly, very few start this fight, even fewer continue to fight and even fewer yet win this battle. Why is this?
It is human nature to want to fit in, to be accepted, to be part of the group. We are social creatures at our core, and it is important to our well being to feel like we belong.
Who we are has been molded by our environment and relationships throughout our life and we may believe this is our true self. This makes it hard to really discover what it means to be yourself, because we have no idea who that is.
Self discovery, the personal acceptance, and the unpredictable reaction of others as we shift, is part of the journey in self-awareness. A beautiful, fulfilling journey at any age which enriches our life in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. It can also be overwhelming, scary, and lonely, which is why having support as you navigate these discoveries is important.
It takes a lot of energy to be someone we are not.
As we discover our true self, becoming grounded in who we are, we settle into a place of ease and internal peace.
It is never too late to Be Yourself.
